Importance: High

Several of you have started to panic due to receiving notices that some courses you have taken at STARFLEET Academy have been deleted. We do apologize for this, but we were unaware this was going to happen when a project was being undertaken. Several sets of circumstances over the years, we ended up with two and three copies of Star Trek courses. This resulted from courses and colleges closed/abandoned and people starting over with new entries. We started getting emails from members who were getting notices that they have been deleted from the DB. They were not getting notices that these courses had been re-entered with the members' grades. Once we realized this was happening and causing a lot of people grief including those who are no longer in STARFLEET we decided to end the project. The deletions were re-entered elsewhere to reduce duplications. No credits were lost.

Condolences ... uh ... congratulations (yeah, that's it) ...
to our new Commanding Officer, Major Shelley Martin.

Ok we are now the 312th Knights of Justice.

Here's the downside. All of our unit honors currently say 212th Warriors of Justice. Now we may of been able to work something out with the name but the new unit number means if we want our unit certifications to say '312' I need to resubmit them but can only use current chapter members.

As we are currently accepting applications for a perm. CO I am waiting to deal with this until I am sure what our ultimate number will be. See each brigade has a set of numbers it uses and until I'm sure where we will end up I don't intend to revisit this.

Please note the Unit Honors of the 212th are ours forever. You are fully entitled to print off the certificates and display them. And to claim due relation to that unit.

And if you wish to join the 3BDE communications network there are 3 lists on the 3BDE link in the links section here, one is the Region 3 list serve, one is the 3BDE list serve and we are in 'zone 1' which is Texas aka where Glenna lives.

If anyone needs help with anything please let me know.

Colonel Christina Doane
312th OIC

I would like to remind all marines that your reading list for the MARINE READING CHALLENGE is due by the end of the month (January, March, May, July, September, November). This would mean for the months of February/March, April/May, June/July, August/September, October/November, December/January. I would encourage ALL Marines to become involved in this challenge. I know you read, so why not enter the challenge? Any book or audio book is fair game. Here is an opportunity to show the 12th BDE that we are Reading Warriors! There is a reading challenge list form on the WOJ list page, in the document section. Any questions, please contact me.

New species of dolphin discovered

Formal delineation of dolphin species is notoriously tricky Continue reading the main story

Researchers have determined that dolphins found in southeastern Australia represent a previously unknown species.

Around 150 of the dolphins live around the Melbourne area and had until now been assumed to be one of the known bottlenose dolphins.

But detailed DNA studies and analysis of skulls in museums showed the two populations are in fact a new species.

The new classification as Tursiops australis is described in PLoS One.

The common name of Burrunan dolphins derives from the Aboriginal Australian for "large sea fish of the porpoise kind".

Previous research had shown that the DNA found in the dolphins differed from that of the known bottlenose species Tursiops truncatus and Tursiops aduncus.

But in order to define a new species, more evidence is needed. Kate Charlton-Robb of Monash University in Melbourne and her colleagues studied dolphin skulls found in a number of museums, as well as more detailed analysis of DNA, to show that T. australis is clearly a different animal.

"This is an incredibly fascinating discovery as there have only been three new dolphin species formally described and recognised since the late 1800s," Ms Charlton-Robb said.

"What makes this even more exciting is this dolphin species has been living right under our noses, with only two known resident populations living in Port Phillip Bay and the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria state."

In fact, now that it is recognised as a separate species it may immediately qualify under Australia's criteria for endangered animals.

"The formal recognition of this new species is of great importance to correctly manage and protect this species, and has significant bearing on the prioritisation of conservation efforts," the authors wrote.

"This is especially crucial given its endemism to a small region of the world, with only two small known resident populations."

The Pool Table is the Master Systems Display Table in Main Engineering

Greetings all
I got to attend IC2011 and greatly enjoyed it and look forward to doing it again next year. I had the pleasure to meet a lot of great people including our own Tina Davis, I highly recommend if you can get to one of these events you should. Iíve been working on the ships deck plans and to assist with this project I ordered a Prometheus model kit itís a cast resin piece that very closely matches the ship specs Iíve included a photo of it in primer and when its completed Iíll post it. Iíll also be making my own ship markings for the Jaresh-Inyo, this will be a first for me so it may take a few tries to get right. Iíve seen postings inquiring about uniforms since Iím not a seamstress I had to order mine and the folks I use are with these folks you can specify exactly how you want it and they will make it happen so check them out if your looking to get a uniform. I can say they will stand behind their product, they did for me.

Iím working with the colors to get the right look of the ship after all we carry the President UFP around so its got to be right.

As you can see the kit separates into 3 sections but Iíll build it as one, its also very detailed and should make a very nice piece when completed. After this photo was taken the tertiary section was dropped from my work table and the nacelles departed the hull and will need repaired before continuing, shouldnít be much of a problem. Iíll post photos when its completed.

The Chiefís tidbits of useless information:
As long as you say you cant, you wonít.

New 'Dark Shadows' cast photo released
Sept. 23, 2011, 6:50 PM EST

The first cast photo of the new "Dark Shadows" movie has been released and it is sure to have fans of the original series excited. Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first-look photo here

In the new picture, feast your eyes on Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins, Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Jackie Earle Haley as groundskeeper Willie Loomis, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and and "Kick-Ass" star Chloe Moretz as her teenage daughter Carolyn.

Find: More buzz on the 'Dark Shadows' movie.

"Dark Shadows" was originally a daytime drama on ABC starring Jonathan Frid as Barnabas. It ran from 1966-1971 and is the basis for this new movie. There was a reboot of the franchise that aired 12 episodes in 1991 starring Ben Cross, Joanna Going and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

This new movie is being directed by (who else) Tim Burton and tells the tail of Barnabas, made into a vampire in 1772 by a witch whose heart he broke. She entombs him for 200 years, until he emerges in 1972 and that's where the movie picks up.

"Dark Shadows" opens May 11. Will you be taking a visit to Collinwood Manor?

"We all come from the same root, but the leaves are all different."
--John Fire Lame Deer, LAKOTA
We all come from one Great Spirit but we are all different and unique. Nothing in the Great Creation has a twin that is identical. Even children that are twins are different. Every single person is extremely special and unique. Each person has a purpose and reason why they are on the Earth. Just like every leaf on a tree is different, each one is needed to make the tree look like it does. No leaf is better or worse than the otheróall leaves are of equal worth and belong on the tree. It is the same with human beings. We each belong here and do things that will affect the great whole.

Great Spirit, today, let me see myself as a valuable contributor to the whole.;

"I can tell you that understanding begins with love and respect. It begins with respect for the Great Spirit. All things- and I mean ALL things-have their own will and their own way and their own purpose; this is what is to be respected."
--Rolling Thunder, CHEROKEE

Everything on earth has a purpose and is designed special. No two things are created identical. Sometimes in our minds we have a picture of how things should be, and often what we see is different from what they really are. When this happens we often want to control how things are, making them act or behave according to our picture. We need to leave things alone. God is running all things. How do we do this? In out minds we tell ourselves to love all things and respect all things just as they are. Accept what we cannot change.

Great Spirit, teach me the value of respect and help me to accept people, places and things just as they are.

President of the United Federation of Planets

Jaresh-Inyo (c. 2372)

In 2372, the post was held by Jaresh-Inyo, a Grazerite. His presidency was marked by a number of troubling foreign and domestic policy developments, including the dissolution of the Khitomer Accords and an undeclared war with the Klingon Empire in 2372, increasing tensions with the Dominion, and the rise of the Maquis.

In 2372, fears of Changeling infiltration of the Federation government reached a high point when Dominion agents were discovered to have detonated a bomb at a diplomatic conference between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire in Antwerp. Starfleet Admiral and Chief of Starfleet Operations Leyton and Captain Benjamin Sisko advocated increased security on Earth following the bombing, and when the planetary power grid was disabled, Inyo declared martial law on the capital planet. Later, it was discovered that the grid had been disabled by Leyton's own agents, and that Leyton was leading an attempted military coup d'etat against the Federation civilian government. Leyton's coup was thwarted by Sisko, but as a result of the scandal, Jaresh-Inyo's political career ended. (DS9: "Homefront", "Paradise Lost")

Jaresh-Inyo left office sometime prior to 2375. While questioning Luther Sloan, Julian Bashir discovered that Section 31 had an operative working in Jaresh-Inyo's cabinet. (DS9: "Extreme Measures")

The novel " Articles of the Federation" establishes that Jaresh-Inyo died in May of 2380, being remembered as a great "peace-time president" being credited with the expansion of civil rights for sentient beings, and the opening of diplomatic relations with the Children of Tama, but not one suited for the job when war with the Dominion became inevitable.
